Tommy's Tavern - 5.16.10

Brooklyn, NY

w/ Spraynard, Paramedic, 86 Mets, and Big Soda

although most of our weekend with Paramedic! fell through, they still were able to play the New York date with us. i was super excited about this show for a while because Big Soda (ex-Cheeky) and 86 Mets (our buddy Jared's new band) were playing.

we left to meet Paramedic in Philly for brunch around 10 AM. basically, about 2 times a month, this house in Philly holds a vegan brunch (5 bucks a plate) to benefit paying off an unfair lawsuit they're in (apparently a pipe broke in their house, and the landlord is making them pay for it, as well as other damages not caused by the house dwellers). i think it's an incredible idea and probably the route i would go as to avoid annoying legal situations. the brunch was incredible as well, i wish i had that tofu scramble and cornbread in front of me right now.

after brunch we all headed to NY to meet up at Jared's apartment for a BBQ. those new york kids always know how to treat each other/strangers. it's so awesome that we can just walk into someone else's apartment and be greeted by everyone (half of which we haven't met) and be given a free plate of vegan food. out of this wooorld. the BBQ was super good times as we all held conversations about how Spraynard is barely out of elementary school and Charlie being a pro snowboarder.

after the BBQ we headed to the show. THEN MARK PARKED CRAZY CLOSE WITHOUT TOUCHING THE OTHER CAR'S BUMPER!!!!!! the venue was pretty rad. it was a bar with a separate room in the back for shows. there was also a strobe light... just sayin.

the first band to play was 86 Mets. Jared has a funny way of forming any band and never ever failing to write unbelievable songs (ie: Get Bent, Frame, How Do We Jump This High?, Thousandaires, etc etc). Jared warned me that the singer was very outlandish and bound to say some weird stuff. weird in a funny way, that is. although he was not as crazy as i expected, he did have some funny comments about how "AWESOME THIS SUMMER IS GOING TO BE." kind of a had to be there thing. also, during their set, the room caught on fire (see picture). i hope to see this band do more... Jared also has a funny way of forming bands and barely playing shows.

next was Spraynard. playing new york is always pretty fun for us. while a couple of my homies can back me up on new york being a weird show atmosphere, the kids are always super supportive and kind. we always manage to make at least 10 more homies every time we play there as well. still don't understand why anyone would live there though... STRESSSSS.

after us, Paramedic! yet again blew me away. i feel like i've posted about them a lot on here, so i'll just say that they have surpassed petty comments on a mindless blog. they are so much more than anything i could say about them (both as people and a band). here's the FULL video of their new song "Zorro." so stoked to hear it recorded.

last was Big Soda. these guys are all such sweethearts and write the best music in the world. they take a really good spin on Descendents kind of pop punk. they have a new 7" coming out on Evil Weevil Records soon, so i'm super excited for that. hopefully they play West Chester on their upcoming tour. keep an eye out fooools!!!

(sorry about the picture, i was in a terrible spot for pictorials and couldn't get any good ones)

after a long goodbye to everyone who served us up some Brooklyn hospitality, we headed home already missing said kids.

stay sweaty!
